The
organisation of classes at l' Ecole du Parc is similar
to those in the French educational system. However,
classes are smaller and, whenever possible, teachers
will divide the class into small groups of children.
L' Ecole du Parc has developed its own educational
programme for its pre-nursery classes as there is no
official French pre-nursery programme. The school's
educational programme adopts the framework of the French
programme for nursery school, and combines this the
recent English programme for 1 to 3 year-olds "Birth
to Three Matters". The pre-nursery teaching team assesses
and adapts the programme on a regular basis.
The parent-teacher partnership is especially important
for children under 3 years. In addition to the usual
communication channels for children at the school (communication
book, e-mail, face-to-face meetings), children in the
pré- maternelle therefore receive a weekly progress
report.
A
central objective for the Créche is to enable each child
to make a gentle transition from a home setting to a
school environment. The Créche is where a child can
learn to become confident and happy in a learning environment.
Care is taken to allow each child to progress at his
or her own pace and on establishing a partnership with
parents. The teacher: child ratio is 1 for 3 children
under 2 years.
Preparatory class for the Petite Section (PS), the
first year of the French nursery school programme.
As is the case for the Crèche, the PPS educational
programme is aimed at facilitating a child's transition
from home to the school environment.
As the children prepare themselves to begin nursery
school (Petite Section PS), their activities will introduce
them to skills they will be developing in the nursery
school (autonomy, writing, numbers and measures).
The teacher: child ratio is 1 for 4 children of 2 years.
Classes of PS, MS and GS follow the programme devised
by the French department of education (Ministère
de l'Education Nationale).
The latter establishes 5 main learning areas:
Language
Living together
Physical movement and expression
Discovery of the world
Sensitivity, imagination and creation
Daily activities children are engaged in are focused
on perfecting skills within these 5 areas of learning.
They are always planned around a theme (e.g. fruits
and vegetables, animals from the cold etc.) in order
to make learning more tangible and fun.
Outings are organised on a regular basis (theatre,
museums, farms) to illustrate the work done in each
class.
Each week, the children go to the gym hall of a nearby
school for indoor physical activities.
Each week, they also join in singing and theatre lessons,
in English, with qualified English teachers.
Singing
and music is an extremely useful educational tool, especially
for very young children. L'Ecole du Parc tries to include
this as much as possible into the curriculum (e.g. songs
and nursery rhymes are sung by the children on a daily
basis, particularly at morning circle times and the
children participate in a music week during which they
welcome a variety of external musicians).
